Water filters and plastic waste

We decided to delete the page about the water filters, as we don’t want to sell them more. It’s not rentabel for us.

But nevertheless we think, it is a good idea using water filters instead of plastic bottles. This year in August we really saw the difference, when His whole family lived with us for a month in the holiday house and did NOT use plastic bottles! 🙂 (At least not as much as before, because I refilled them every day with filtered tab water^^)In Portugal the tab water normally is potable, but it tastes not good, because it’s chlorinated. So most of the people buy big plastic bottles of drinking water, which is a really big amount of plastic waste coming together every day. For us this was not acceptable so we looked for water filters. We installed it in January 2017 in the holiday house in Portugal and it’s working really good for now. It was easy to install, the taste of the water is amazing and we’re really happy that we are able to live without plastic bottles.

To buy water filters is for sure not the solution of the problem of unpotable water. It’s quite frightening to see that there is more and more water unpotable because of all the pollution. This is the real problem, that should be solved. And of course, the filter is made out of plastic, too…

But we think, it’s still a better solution than using a big amount of plastic bottles EVERY DAY ending up in the trash.

Besides this: Maybe you already heard about the “Great Pacific garbage pack”? It is a area of concentrated plastic garbage with roughly the size of Europe swimming in the Pacific Ocean… Maybe you remember this the next time you’re thinking about buying water in plastic bottles.

Just because we don’t see it, it doesn’t mean, it’s not there.

 

Rolling stones…

We’re back again after three weeks in Portugal! It was really shocking for me to see all the burned forests of the many fires this year in the north of Portugal. It’s a big difference, if you see it somewhere in TV or if you drive through these endless burned landscapes.

But this also assured me, that our project is right and important. Our site becomes livelier and also a little bit greener. Our trees are growing: some of them are almost as tall as I now 🙂

So, what did we do besides swimming in the Sea and making Siesta? 😉

First the “bad” news: We didn’t go on with the loam house 😦 I hoped, that we could build the second wall this year, but we want to build it with rammed earth and this is a tiring and boring work and we just had a few helpers, so we decided to leave the house like it is for now and concentrated on the soil.

Before the soil was full of big and smaller stones, dry, condensed and damaged of erosion. This is how all the site looked in the beginning, before we began to work in August 2015:

Of course, it already had changed very much in the last two years, but this year we really wanted to push it forward a little and kind of defibrilate the soil^^ So, first we ploughed it with our small tractor. Although afterwards we hope, we don’t need this, in the beginning, we think, it is quite important to plough. So He was driving the tractor and I was picking stones and stones and more stones out of the soil. Then we watered the soil, put some straw and cow dung on it, ploughed it again, picked out stones, water, stones, straw, stones… I think, you can imagine 😉

Besides this: Some of the straw we kept directly of the oat, that we sowed the last time. A nice side effect is, that we have now many birds on the site 🙂

Back to the soil: After all of this work it looks like this now: The soil is amazing! It’s really soft and rich and there are many useful insects and animals like earth worms in there. After we finished working on the soil, we spread a mixture of different seeds like cereals, peas, sunflowers, fava beans and lupines and watered and covered them with soil. All in all we worked on the four upper terraces of the site, which is quite a lot.

On the right side of the picture you also can see the wall to the next terrace and this is where we put all the collected stones. So the stones will help to keep the terraces stabil and we didn’t have to carry the stones very far away 😉

On the left side of the picture you see the other big task, that we had this summer: to close our tank waterproof. He used different things like waterproof masses, different fabrics out of waterproof materials, concrete and everything else, what He could find.All in all we needed about three days of working, testing, drying, working,… Here you can see the different layers we used to close the tank:

And finally: we made it! 🙂 But as His family renamed our tank almost immediately to “the pool”, we had to adapt a little. For a real pool you need some space to relax around and as we had a small rest of sand of last year, we decided to create a beach, so we could go swimming and enjoy our work after a long day 🙂Of course, there were more works during these three weeks, like planting 11 new fruit trees, adapting and extending the water system, caring for the herb garden and my beautiful mushroom, but that would be too long for today 🙂

Back from Flower Paradise

We’re back and we were very happy to see everything growing and developing in Portugal. The flower and colour variety is quite astonishing. Here are some pictures we made of our site:

But we didn’t just enjoy the flowers, we also worked. Our neighbour made some beautiful steps on the side of the water tank and also finished the walls for the showers.

Last January we made the fundament of the showers, so our neighbour could go on to build the walls. It’s amazing as all of these stones are of our site and he had really much work to keep them, to bring them up, to break them if needed and to build the wall with them… We’re so grateful for his help! 🙂

Unfortunately the tank is not completely waterproof, but as some of the stones have quite big holes, this was not a big surprise. Now we will have to find a solution to close it completely.

We also reconnected the water system for the trees as it is getting really hot now.

I had a lot of work in the herb garden, as it was really difficult to find the herbs between all of the wild plants. I used the weed to cover the herb beds.

Besides this we harvested some kind of Portuguese beans (favas) and made the vegetable garden together with His father so we and His family will be able to eat our own vegetables again in August. His father will care for this garden until August.

We made as much as possible what we could do in these few days and we’re quite pleased with our work.

Now we’re looking forward to August while we finish our compost toilets.

3 weeks in portuguese winter

After Christmas we and my parents traveled again to our site in the Algarve to see the fireworks on New Year’s Eve and to go on with our works.

First of all, of course we had to see the wall. Though there were two waterlines damaging a little the outside of the loam wall, it looks quite good. Almost no cracks, nothing broken 🙂

On the inside of the wall there are some small cracks, because we didn’t have the time to finish the wall as we should have.

We didn’t have the time to fix the wall, but at least I fixed the holes in the plasticplane, which caused the waterlines.

The most important work in the last three weeks was the water system. We want to make two showers outside. There are enough showers in the holiday house, but we want to have everything what we need outside of this house, as it is the holiday house of His family. Next year we just want to use the bedrooms there 🙂

So we cleaned the ground and made the fundament for the showers. The walls will be out of stones of the site, like the fundament of the loam house. On the bottom left you see the small tank, where the dirty water will be connected. We had quite a lot of work to open the lines where now is the red tube.

The water will stop in another small tank, where will be a filter to clean the water. After this it floats into a small lake, where we want to put sand and some water plants, to clean the water. As we will just use natural cleaning products in the showers and we hope we find a good filter, the idea is that this mini lake can also be used by birds and other animals.

After the water is clean, it runs into the big tank, which our amazing neighbor had spent the last months building. It’s so big, you almost can call it a pool 🙂 He had used the stones of our site, which looks really beautiful.

We spend a whole day to make the fundament with concrete. We don’t like concrete that much, but we didn’t find a better way to close it completely without losing water afterwards.

While He and our neighbor spent the most time on this works, I and my parents began to create the herbal garden. It will be a garden with herbs for the kitchen and for teas, medicinal plants and eatable flowers. He had digged over the soil a little, so it was soft but very heavy thanks to the rain. We began to mark the trails of the garden with the stones laying everywhere and to plant the first plants we had.

When it began to rain again we saw that the rain water would run directly into the trails, so we decided to secure the trails with smaller stones and to create some rain water lines in order to keep the trails dry. This is also very comfortable when you want to pick out stones of the garden, you just have to let them drop on the trails:)

After that I distributed seeds of different wild flowers and other plants and we’re really excited how the garden will look like the next time we see it…

Besides this I was really happy to see my mushroom grow 🙂 Yes, I made a course last year, how to grow eatable mushrooms, because I really like mushrooms but I’m not talented in finding and identifying them, so I decided to grow my own mushrooms. I planted one of them last year in a piece of wood and it grew really beautiful and is quite tasty. The german name is “Austernseitling” 😉

Unser Wassersystem

Ich habe es (endlich!) geschafft, unser Wassersystem auf überschaubare und verständliche Art in eine Skizze zu bringen 🙂 Das meiste davon existiert und funktioniert schon so, wie es gezeichnet ist, der Rest kommt Anfang dieses Jahres dann noch.

Der Wasserkreislauf in zwei separaten Systemen (hellblau + rot und dunkelblau + violett)

Ich versuch mal, alles zu erklären:

Wasser bekommen wir, wie schon beschrieben, im Moment noch über Kanister von einem Freund. Zukünftig soll aber auch Regenwasser mitverwendet werden (links). Das Wasser wird gefiltert und kommt dann in einen Tank, der 1 000 Liter fasst. Über eine Pumpe wird das kalte “Nutz”-Wasser (hellblau) dann direkt ins Haus geleitet zu den Wasserhähnen und zur Klospülung und außerdem in den Boiler, um das “Nutz”-Wasser dann aufzuheizen. Die Pumpe hat einen Druckschalter, so dass, wenn ein Unterdruck im Boiler entsteht, automatisch wieder Wasser nachgepumpt wird, um den Druck auszugleichen. Das im Boiler aufgeheizte Wasser (rot) läuft dann über ein Hitzeventil auch ins Haus und kann genutzt werden.

Aufgeheizt wird das “Nutz”-Wasser über den Boiler, der als Wärmetauscher funktioniert. Dort fließt heißes Wasser (violett) rein und gibt die Wärme an das “Nutz”-Wasser ab, während es selbst erkaltet (dunkelblau). Dieser zweite Wasserkreislauf wird über zwei verschiedene Systeme aufgeheizt: Die erste Wärmequelle ist unsere Feuerstelle. Direkt hinter dem Feuer verlaufen serpentinenartig Rohre, durch die das kalte Wasser fließt. Das Wasser wird durch das Feuer aufgeheizt und steigt nach oben. Die zweite Wärmequelle ist die Sonne. Das Wasser kann entweder über die Feuerstelle oder über eine Pumpe auf das Dach geleitet werden, wo es von der Sonne erwärmt wird. Dieses zweite System mit der Solarplatte existiert bis jetzt noch nicht.

Das durch Feuer bzw. Sonne erwärmte Wasser wird dann durch eine weitere Pumpe  zum Boiler befördert, wo es das “Nutz”-Wasser aufheizt. Zusätzlich kann es in drei im Haus verteilte Heizkörper geleitet werden und diese aufheizen.

Falls das Wasser durch das Feuer zu heiß wird, wird es über ein Ventil umgeleitet in einen extra Behälter. Dieser Behälter ist eigentlich nur ein einfacher Eimer, der immer mit kaltem Wasser gefüllt ist. Zur Not kann das heiße Wasser also dort entweichen. Das abgekühlte Wasser wird dann aber wieder dem Kreislauf zugefügt.

In dieses zweite System (dunkelblau-violett) haben wir außerdem ein paar Liter Frostschutzmittel dazugemischt, damit die Rohre jetzt im Winter nicht einfrieren. Im Sommer dann brauchen wir die Heizkörper und das Feuer vermutlich relativ wenig, so dass das von der Sonne erwärmte Wasser (hoffentlich) ausreicht, um das “Nutz”-Wasser im Boiler zu erhitzen.

Die Pumpen werden alle mit Strom betrieben, den wir über weitere Solarplatten bekommen (die Skizze zum Stromkreislauf kommt demnächst). Im Moment läuft jedoch die Pumpe, die das heiße Wasser von der Feuerstelle zum Boiler führt, noch mit 220 Volt, so dass wir leider entweder das Feuer nicht zu heiß werden lassen dürfen (damit das Wasser nicht zu heiß wird) oder den Generator einschalten müssen, um die Pumpe laufen lassen zu können. Wir werden aber, sobald wir eine passende 12 Volt-Pumpe gefunden haben, diese austauschen.

So, ich hoffe, das war halbwegs verständlich 🙂

Wasser

Bei dem Wetter dieses Jahr ist Wasser zum Glück kein Problem für uns. Die Erde auf unserem Grundstück ist sehr schwer und feucht, so dass die Pflanzen eigentlich nur im Juli gegossen wurden. Wir wollen sowieso möglichst wenig gießen, damit die Pflanzen ein starkes Wurzelwerk ausbilden und sich selbst versorgen können.

Falls wir aber doch mal Wasser draußen brauchen, haben wir mittlerweile drei kleine “Teiche”, aus denen wir uns bedienen können. Der erste Teich ist tatsächlich eine Plastik-Teichwanne, wie man sie im Handel kaufen kann. Wir haben sie jedoch am Straßenrand liegen sehen und kurz bevor die Spermüllsammlung kam mitgenommen und bei uns eingegraben. Gespeist wird sie natürlich vom Regen und von einer zusätzlichen Rinne, die das Regenwasser vom Hausdach in den Teich leitet. Die anderen beiden Teiche sind aufgeschnittene und umgelegte Öltanks, die wir bekommen haben. Die sind zwar mittlerweile auch voll Wasser, aber noch nicht bepflanzt.

Da aber nicht nur Pflanzen auf dem Grundstück leben, haben wir auch Wasser, das wir selbst nutzen können 😉 Langfristig wollen wir Regenwasser gefiltert dann auch für Toilette, Abwasch, Dusche usw. nutzen. Aktuell haben wir jedoch einen 1 000 l Tank, in dem wir Trinkwasser gespeichert haben. Das wird im Moment für den kompletten Haushalt verwendet. Dieses Wasser holen wir regelmäßig über Kanister bei einem Freund, was aber natürlich keine Ideallösung ist. Wir hatten bis jetzt nur leider noch nicht die Gelegenheit, dieses System zu ändern, das kommt aber noch.

Heißes Wasser beispielsweise zum Spülen bekommen wir über unseren Gasherd, auf dem wir kleinere Mengen Wasser erhitzen. Größere Mengen, wie etwa zum Duschen, werden in einem Boiler erhitzt. Seit ein paar Tagen haben wir einen 200 l Boiler, der fürs erste reichen sollte 🙂 Der wird aktuell noch über den Generator betrieben, allerdings arbeitet Er gerade daran, Rohre vom Kamin zum Boiler zu legen, so dass das Wasser zusätzlich durch das Feuer aufgeheizt werden kann. Außerdem sollen die Rohre dann später noch als zusätzliche Wärmequelle fürs Haus dienen.

Das Abwasser fließt, soweit wir das feststellen konnten, ohne den den Boden aufzureißen, in einen unterirdischen Behälter oder sickert direkt in den Boden. Da wirs aber nicht genau wissen, steht das auf jeden Fall auf der To-Do Liste, das mal nachzuschauen. Ich will auf jeden Fall auch mal ein eigenes Wasserfiltersystem mit verschiedenen Schichten aus Kohle, Sand, Moos usw. ausprobieren und berichte dann von den (Miss-)Erfolgen.
